Brief Bio
I have about seven years of experience in the field of web design and began writing HTML 3 in Notepad when I first started. Needless to say I've progressed since then moving into Full Flash site development and then back into XTHML/CSS/Hybrid design.
However, my skill set leans more towards the design aspect and less towards development such as heavy duty coding and backend programming. I have a degree in Theater Arts, which may seem to be unrelated, but actually has a very similar production process to web design (Pre-production/Production/Post-Production) and has helped me immensely throughout the years with client relations and my approach to the development process. I lost my love for Theater in college but I gained a new love for Design. I taught myself web design because I loved it and I continue to practice it out of that same love and fascination.
Philosophy
Although I can execute many cutting edge Flash and xhtml/css designs, I've found that this isn't necessarily the approach that serves the customer best in all situations. In my opinion, Design is not the same as Styling. Design serves objectives and needs to fulfill a function. If it doesn't fulfill its function then it's failed, no matter how wonderful it appears. Form should follow Function and Design is not usually Fine Art although it can definitely be Artistic at times. With that said, Styling is an important element of many designs and can serve to communicate and strengthen a site's message.
Having learned the hard way from personal experience about designing difficult to use interfaces and layouts, I prefer to emphasize simplicity in design and to put the focus on the information being conveyed.
My sites have a tendency to appear a bit basic and traditional, but this is built on a desire to present people with layouts and information in an easy-to-access format. I won't say that I've always succeeded and sometimes certain choices weren't decided me (for better or for worse) but creating web sites that are attractive yet simple as possible is always a primary goal of mine. This isn't to say that I'm not open and wouldn't enjoy doing things differently or pushing the envelope on what can be done, but I believe that extreme approaches need to be justified according to a web sites objectives and its target audience.
I love web design and I'm constantly learning and seeking to grow as a professional.
